Here are the photos from Hyde's (Lasiodora difficilis) move.

This is the long side of the cage, not the short end. So, as you can see, Hyde was overdue for more space! This species is very fast, so we put the cage in the fridge and set a timer for 7 minutes to slow the spider down.

Just like if we were hunting tarantulas outside, we flooded Hyde a bit to get "him" to come out of his hole. Even when he is out, he rushes into his burrow when we pick up his cage. Here I've caught him.

It took Hyde at least 30+ minutes before he was ready to venture out of that cup. I'm glad I have a few of them.

I tend to use "dirt" that is pretty moist. I always sprinkle some of the older, dry dirt from the old habitat into the new, to help our babies feel more at home. I have no idea if they see it that way, but I do what I can for their comfort.

Hyde is the larger of our two Brazilian Fire Red juveniles. I think I have pictures of Jekyll's move, too. Complicated pregnancy will do that, though. When we got Tiny, we got several different slings and this one was the tiniest of the bunch, without a doubt. We received it in a vial. We still have the vial!

Just as you read on care sheets, Brazilian Whiteknees are voracious eaters and we've thoroughly enjoyed watching Tiny wrestle with food! We recently moved Tiny into a larger enclosure.

Sometimes I just set the deli or spice cup (or whatever they are in) into the new cage and leave the spiders to adjust in their own time. Tiny set to work immediately and made his old home a part of his new home!

His burrow is actually fairly intricate. You can peek in from either side, which is convenient. You can shine a light on one side and peek from the other. However, in the middle, the hold turns and goes into the middle of the cage. We had no idea for a while as to how far, since he didn't dig along the bottom of the cage like some of our pets have done. Now he has dug a small hole up to the surface, though. It is pretty far down from the main burrow entrances.

Tiny is no longer the smallest of our collection. The Curly Hairs are slower growing. Tiny has definitely become a favorite of the collection with his new burrow and his pretty stripes.Momma Jorjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17736034293320117257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7066187323872269079.post-14572136940495627842012-05-07T11:29:00.001-05:002012-05-07T11:29:00.035-05:00SFB - No MoreSeñor Fuzzy Britches proved himself to be male when he built a sperm web. I tried to find someone that needed a male Curly Hair (Brachypelma albopilosum) for mating, but it is such a common species that I couldn't find any takers. They do make for good starter pets.

And so... he passed. I totally understand the majorly short life span of male tarantulas in comparison to females now. Males will stop eating once they are ready to mate. They just kind of whither away. Here is my photo dedication to Señor Fuzzy Britches:

We've moved twice and had another (human) baby since my last update. I've been meaning to get back over here, but it is hard to find time with two little humans under foot (plus I stay busy on my other blog). Spiders are so much easier! I did, however, get a little prod of inspiration this week. Stan Schultz, co-author of The Tarantula Keeper's Guide, emailed me requesting permission to link a couple of my photos from this blog. I was so excited and flattered! He was glad to inspire my return to the blog as well.

The photos he will be linking (on a care sheet on relative humidity with regard to tarantula care) were of silk turrets made by our Cobalt Blue (Haplopelma lividium), Tears. She turned out to be a he and passed away before our last move. He did stay hidden so much that we're not sure how long he was dead before we noticed. He was a gorgeous specimen.

And so, in honor of Tears, and perhaps a new tradition for this blog, here are all of my photos of him. These are unedited and not cropped - just resized for posting. (I usually crop to just the good bits.) I'm also posting these in case Stan would rather use any of my other silk turret photos. I had not posted all of them. Perhaps I can get some publishing advice from him as well! I have a partially-written basics book on tarantulas. I could use some inspiration there, too, but have another project I need to finish first.

Without further ado, here are my Tears photos:
We hope you've enjoyed Tears even partially as much as we did. We miss him. He was fascinating! His final hide was a deep tunnel running all the way along the bottom of his enclose so we could peek up at him from underneath. Molting is such a faster process for the younger spiders. Hyde has never been quite as much of a fast-mover as Jeckyll... until now. He is lightning fast now as well. I need to add the lightning bolt to the label on his cage!Momma Jorjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17736034293320117257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7066187323872269079.post-18619402640536585382011-08-18T15:40:00.006-05:002011-09-03T21:12:25.910-05:00SFB Molt - as Predicted!Last month, in my General Update, I mentioned that Señor Fuzzy Britches had finally begun digging in his new space. I also noted that his coloration had changed a bit and predicted he might soon molt.

Elmo spotted SFB in the beginnings of molting yesterday morning! I was so pleased and (once things really got started) spent hours photographing and taking video of the process!
We've had a few health issues and even deaths in our [human] family in the past few months. It really put our hobby on the back burner.

You missed our Indian Ornamental (Punjab) molting again already. We may have to move it into a bigger jar again soon! None of the photos came out very clear, too much glare off the glass jar.

Tears (Cobalt Blue) spent about 4 days straight (day and night!) working on a new hole. It is larger than her original burrow. Then she retreated back to her original hole and we haven't seen her since! We're used to her hiding, but we're getting a little worried. Hopefully she'll peek out soon.

We got Hyde (Brazilian Fire Red) moved into a larger container that holds moisture much better than the previous dish. We won't be using that one for pets anymore, though we may use it as a temporary spot for small crickets. Hyde has just started moving dirt around in the last couple of days.

My Curly Hair (S.F.B.) has finally been moving dirt and digging in his new cage. I noticed today that his abdomen coloring looks different. I think he(?) may molt again soon!

Pretty much all the "kids" are looking fat and sassy, especially the babies! We're currently trying the larger spiders on Super Worms. They are an option we can keep on hand for longer than crickets. Everyone seems to like them alright. We just have to be careful not to let them burrow into the dirt. This is slightly limiting, but they're pretty fat so we can give one at a time. Even Jekyll and Hyde have managed them!

Also, he does not appear to have come out black this time. The hairs all over him are crazy long! His legs are very thick, too. Elmo is convinced that King is really a Queen. King did, eventually, completely bury this water dish. We put a larger one elsewhere in the aquarium. He then dug a bit of a large bowl next to the old water dish. I have occasionally found her peeking out the top of her hole if I looked in the middle of the night with the lights off. However, lately, she has been coming all the way out! Even with the lights on! She even hangs out outside her hole a little. As usual, we're hoping that this behavior change = imminent molt. That is always the hope with change in behavior.
HanzoOur friend has chosen a new name for our old Butch. He is now Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion's alter ego name in Mortal Kombat). We all call him Hanzo for short. So he had a friend with 5 pinky mice and no use. He took them over for Hanzo. One, then two were put in with Hanzo and while he did seem to notice, he wasn't showing a lot of interest. By this morning, however, he finally snagged one. As of this evening, he let it go and snagged the other.
It was pretty funny. Shortly thereafter, we were trying to figure out where the worm went. Then Punjab came down from the top as if to show us that he had things well in hand. lol
This time, though, we have given him a pet. Brandon took Butch home with him tonight. He has just not turned out to be as entertaining as Elmo had hoped and Brandon was very interested. I never was terribly interested in scorpions.
It was so cute, Brandon read the book I gave him and then was watching YouTube videos about scorpions. There is a bait shop close to his place, so he'll be able to get crickets easily. He was fascinated and I don't doubt he'll make a great pet owner for Butch.Momma Jorjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17736034293320117257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7066187323872269079.post-71929025938259623412011-04-16T12:14:00.001-05:002011-04-16T12:14:59.285-05:00Rehousing PunjabI recently readied 2 spice bottles as houses for tree-dwelling (arboreal) tarantulas. My plan was to move Punjab (Indian Ornamental / Poecilotheria regalis) as well as Tanzania (Ornamental Baboon / Heteroscodra maculata). I got a little substrate (dirt) in the bottom and then curled up some fake vine into the bottle. They look beautiful! We decided, though, that Tanzania isn't quite big enough yet. We don't want anyone escaping through the holes!

So I've been waiting (and waiting and waiting) for Punjab to be on the lid of his cage. My plan was to remove the lid and place it over the spice bottle. In the middle of cooking breakfast this morning, Elmo brought Punjab into the kitchen. I opened the spice bottle and carefully removed the lid from the current dish. I was having trouble getting the spider off the lid, though. I tried edging him with my spider paint brush. NOTE: I did not refrigerate the spider before this attempt. He is really fast. This species is known for its lightning speed. And too small to grab without fear of harming him.

Can you guess what happened next? You know Punjab came right out from under that lid and onto my hand. The authors of this blog do not endorse nor advise handling tarantulas or other arachnids. Elmo immediately jumped back and I felt an immediate rush of adrenalin. I tried to coax Punjab, but quickly realized it was not going to happen. In a few seconds, he was on my outer elbow. No one else here handles spiders. I had Elmo get me a little bug jar we use to grab crickets. I quickly cupped it over Punjab on my arm. Thankfully, he climbed onto the jar on his own very soon. Elmo helped me get the lid onto the jar. I set it ALL aside and finished cooking. I should not have attempted any of this without eating and without refrigerating this species.

After breakfast had settled, I put Punjab in the fridge and set my timer for 8 minutes. I usually do 5 if I'm even going to open the cage of some of my faster specimens. I flipped through my book while I was waiting.
I reviewed handling to have my suspicions confirmed: I just shouldn't try to pick up a spider so small. When the timer finished I got Punjab out of the fridge. I opened the jar a little, but wondered if he was really slowed at all. I wouldn't know until he moved. I nudged him with my delicate paint brush. He moved, but not very fast. I positioned the little jar over the bottle and nudged him in the general direction. He went right into the jar! He kind of dropped to the bottom and stayed for a bit.
Well as I was headed to bed last night, I grabbed the flashlight and checked on all our kids. (I usually do this right before bed, partially in hopes of seeing Tears since she hides all the time.) Well I found Bonnie in the middle of molting! I was thrilled and considered doing a photo shoot, but I already had the lights out and was headed to bed. She is looking great today!Momma Jorjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17736034293320117257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7066187323872269079.post-26319204225384533182011-04-13T17:12:00.000-05:002011-04-13T17:12:45.029-05:00Food Problems + Molt!Monday evening I opened the meal worms to find... they were HUGE! I should have taken a picture. They were bigger than the babies! So Tuesday I had to take them back. That pet store doesn't carry MINI meal worms. So I returned them, picked up a couple of watering dishes, and then had to go up the street to another pet store to purchase mini meal worms. The clay dishes we've been using don't actually hold water, they just leech it through to the dirt.
